Atomic energy technology, politics, and perceptions from a nuclear energy insider who served as a US nuclear submarine engineer officer

The Atomic Show #073-2 – Gwyneth Cravens and Rip Anderson – author and tour guide for Power to Save the World

October 31, 2007 By Rod Adams 2 Comments

Gwyneth Cravens, a former anti-nuclear activist is a switcher who has just published a new book titled “Power to Save the World: The Truth About Nuclear Energy”. The tour guide for the journey that changed her mind was Rip Anderson, a scientist with a long history in nuclear research. Part II of a two part interview.

This is part II of a rather long interview with Gwyneth Cravens a former anti-nuclear activist who has switched sides to write a book that is strongly in favor of increased nuclear power developments. Her book is based on her personal research and actual visits to nuclear facilities while guided by Rip Anderson a scientist who has worked on a number of nuclear projects during his lengthy career.

You should be able to find Power to Save the World at your local bookstore. It is scheduled for a national release on 30 October. If your local store is not stocking it, ask them why not.

Of course, you can also order it from Amazon at Power to Save the World.

Rod, in this podcast you mention computer simulations that let the user pretend to operate a nuclear power plant. Do you know of any such programs that are available for download, or are these really expensive private pieces of software that are held onto as tightly as possible?

    Daniel:

One simulator that I have heard about for several years, but not actually used myself is available at http://www.ae4rv.com/index.htm

It is designed for a Windows PC or Pocket PC. I am a Mac guy (thought I have to use a Windows machine at work) so I do not have the right machines to try it out. The flash demo on the web looks pretty interesting.

It is a bit simplistic, but then, a properly designed reactor is pretty easy to operate.
