Stephen Burns sworn in as NRC commissioner
Stephen Burns, whose nomination to serve as an NRC (Nuclear Regulatory Commission) commissioner was confirmed by the US Senate on September 16, 2014, was sworn in yesterday to become the 35th person to serve as an NRC commissioner. His 5-year term expires on June 30, 2019.
The ceremony took place at the NRC’s office building in Rockville, MD; Dr. Allison Macfarlane administered the oath of office.
Many NRC observers are betting that Mr. Burns is the leading contender to replace Dr. Macfarlane when she departs from the Commission effective January 1 to assume her new role as Director of the Center for International Science and Technology Policy at George Washington University. The President may decide to change the Chairman assignment earlier than that.
