President Obama Calls Japan a Model For Nuclear Energy Development

On Friday, November 13, 2009, President Obama paid a brief visit to Tokyo, Japan. As part of his visit, he gave a speech in which he affirmed America’s commitment to the basic bargains of the nuclear non proliferation treaty.

  • All nations have a right to peaceful use of nuclear energy
  • Nations with nuclear weapons have a responsibility to move toward nuclear disarmament
  • Those without nuclear weapons have a responsibility to forsake them

Here is how he followed that listing:

In these, Japan serves as an example to the world; that true peace and power can be achieved by taking this path. For decades, Japan has enjoyed the benefits of peaceful use of nuclear energy while rejecting nuclear arms development. And by any measure this has increased Japan’s security and enhanced its position.
