Atomic energy technology, politics, and perceptions from a nuclear energy insider who served as a US nuclear submarine engineer officer

Hooray – Initial Election Results from Germany Indicate Nuclear Phase Out Plan May Be Reconsidered

September 27, 2009 By Rod Adams

According a Reuters article titled Merkel wins German vote, on track for center-right government, Frank-Walter Steinmeier, the leader of the Social Democrat Party, has admitted that his party has suffered a “bitter defeat”. The initial results indicate that Angela Merkel will be able to form a coalition that unites her center-right party with the Free Democrats (FDP), which tends to be a pro-business group that has made it clear that they do not want to follow through with the SPD/Green party nuclear phase out plan initially negotiated by Gerhard Schroeder.

Together with the FDP, Merkel would be expected to push for tax relief and extend the lifespan of German nuclear plants that are scheduled to be phased out over the next decade.

That is good news for all people who breathe in Europe.
