Four companies in bidding for Westinghouse
Four companies, two with headquarters in the United States – General Electric and Shaw Group – and two with their headquarters in Japan – Mitsubishi Heavy Industries and Toshiba – are viewed as the front runners in the growing bidding war for Westinghouse.
Westinghouse is a wholly owned subsidiary of BNFL, an integrated nuclear plant supply company owned by the British Government.
The initial price tag set for Westinghouse was approximately 1 billion pounds stirling, (about $1.8 billion) but the final price is expected to rise significantly above that mark. Since the sale was announced, there have been several new announcements by utility companies planning to apply for licenses to build Westinghouse designed AP-1000 nuclear power plants, and Westinghouse is still in the running for a four reactor project in China.
