Atomic Show #148 – Hyperion Power Module Update with VP of Engineering and Chief of Staff
I spoke yesterday evening with Forrest Rudin and TJ Trapp of Hyperion Power Generation. TJ is Hyperion’s Vice President of Engineering, Forrest is the Chief of Staff. You can listen to our conversation at Atomic Show #148 – Hyperion Power Module Update.
We were able to delve into some significant detail about the current state of the system design including the coolant choice, the fuel material, the reactivity control system, and the steam plant conditions. We also talked a bit about the licensing strategy, some potential customer applications, and the reasons why the company believes that a far smaller atomic energy system (25 MWe vice the “standard” 1,000+ MWe) can serve the needs of a large and diverse customer population. We even discussed the applicability of the HPM to commercial nuclear ship propulsion.
Excellent Atomic Show. The HPM v 2.0 is very impressive. Especially impressive is how the safety and transportation is taken care of – that is seamlessly elegant engineering… Nice that the HPM will be able to generate superheated, if not supercritical steam, and then there’s always the supercritical CO2 option…
I’ll have to cite this in the Hyperion article at Wikipedia. It would be nice if there were some drawings to work from, I could even do an illustration.
Great job, Rod!
