Don't knock our Nuke power
It took me a while to find a good link to this article, so I am a little late in talking about an interesting report that was published in the Mississauga Business Times on 27 October 2005. It describes a talk given by my friend and colleague Dr. Jerry Cuttler to his local Rotary Club.
Dr. Cuttler describes how one small bundle of CANDU fuel, 4 inches in diameter and 20 inches long, supplies enough energy to supply a household with 100 years worth of electricity. That is also the volume of the waste that has to be stored and isolated from the environment after performing its mission. That problem is much easier to solve than figuring out how to store the 36 thousand of tons of CO2 that would be emitted if the household’s electricity needs over 100 years was produced by burning coal.
