Atomic energy technology, politics, and perceptions from a nuclear energy insider who served as a US nuclear submarine engineer officer

Progress Energy gets favorable reaction about Crystal River

October 9, 2005 By Rod Adams

Progress Energy is looking for a site for a new nuclear power plant in Florida. The state’s growing population is leading to a need for more electricity generating capacity and competitive choices like coal, oil, gas, wind, and solar are either more expensive, dirtier or both.

On October 9, 2005 the Citrus Times section of the St. Petersburg Times published an excellent article by Catherine Shoichet titled “Nuclear plant idea has support.”

In the article, Vicki Phillips, the Citrus County Commission’s Chairwoman, is quoted as saying, “We would be delighted to have another nuclear plant here.”

I see this as just one more invitation from people with knowledge and experience of the benefits of nuclear energy to build a plant in their backyard.
