Atomic energy technology, politics, and perceptions from a nuclear energy insider who served as a US nuclear submarine engineer officer

Gotta love a pro-nuclear politician – like Governor Otter of Idaho

October 4, 2007 By Rod Adams

Alternative Energy Retailer (AER) – http://www.aer-online.com/ – claims to be the leading resource for sellers, installers, and designers of alternative energy equipment. On October 3, 2007, AER published a story titled Idaho Governor Is “Butch” On Nuclear, Not Renewables that must be causing their customers some dismay.

Here is a quote from the article:

But what about solar power or wind energy? According to the Associated Press, Otter, who became governor in January, dismissed those solutions as too costly to install and too slow to achieve full payback.

“Alternative energy, clean energy – those are all great ideas,” says Otter. “But when you take a look at the impact they have and the subsidy they need, solar and wind both are tremendously subsidized. I think there are other clean energy alternatives. I think nuclear is one of them. I’m behind nuclear.”

I love a guy who can do the math, recognizes the right answer and tells the truth even when he knows it might not please the listener who asked the question.

As an aside, I wonder if Governor Otter knows how hard some of his predecessors worked to get certain nuclear training, research and development projects pushed out of Idaho in the 1990s.
