Atomic energy technology, politics, and perceptions from a nuclear energy insider who served as a US nuclear submarine engineer officer

Nevada governor explains opposition to Yucca Mountain and his alternative solution

March 6, 2007 By Rod Adams

Chris Matthews of the MSNBC show “Hardball” interviewed Nevada Governor Jim Gibbons about what candidates need to do to win in Nevada. The segment is titled Nevada: New battleground of 2008?

A big issue there is, of course, Yucca Mountain, which is nearly universally opposed in the state. Governor Gibbons does not question the science; he questions the perception that Nevada is simply a “dumping ground”.

When Matthews asked him for his alternative, the governor stated his support for recycling nuclear fuel, using thorium based fuels and using plutonium as a fuel. His stated belief is that the combination of these advanced fuel cycle technologies would make an underground storage location unnecessary.

I agree with the governor.

(BTW – this is not a “news” story; the video appeared on the 25 January edition of Hardball. One of the joys of Internet video is that programs last longer than ever before.)
