Helen Caldicott explains her antinuclear positions
Dr. Helen Caldicott has been an effective leader in the antinuclear movement for several decades. I disagree strongly with her position on nuclear power, though I do not have quite a strong a disagreement with her stance on nuclear weapons. However, I recognize that she is a formidable woman with a large following and I respect her passion.
If you want to hear her talking about why she is so adamantly opposed to nuclear power, you can download an interview that she did with Bruce Gellerman of Living on Earth during the week of September 29, 2006. Dr. Caldicott is currently on a book promotion tour and recently passed through Washington, D. C.
Unfortunately, my timing was off – I was in Norfolk on a business trip last week. I really would have liked to ask her a few questions about how she feels about coal, oil and gas as long term energy sources. I would also like to ask her if her explanation about the carbon dioxide emitted from nuclear power plant construction and operation takes into account the fact that it is pretty easy to eliminate the carbon used in enrichment by simply using nuclear generated electricity as the power source for the enrichment and concrete plants.
Maybe someday I can get her to agree to an interview for The Atomic Show.
