Atomic energy technology, politics, and perceptions from a nuclear energy insider who served as a US nuclear submarine engineer officer

Another Green Converts to Nuclear – Mark Lynas Now Accused of Heresy

September 29, 2008 By Rod Adams

A friend sent me a link to a well-written expose of the treatment given to a card carrying UK Green Party member after his “Damascene conversion” from an opposer to a supporter of nuclear power. As he says,

…the Green case against nuclear power is based largely on myth and dogma. My tipping point came when I discovered just how much nuclear power has changed since I first set my mind against it.

Go and read the article, it is worth every minute that you spend doing so.

After I read the article and started writing this post, I realized that Mark Lynas had mentioned that he had a website and that he had received some rather pointed comments once he wrote a post detailing his reasons for the conversion to supporting nuclear power. So I did the natural thing and Googled my way to Mark Lynas.org and found the post that offended some of his fellow Greens. Here is the concluding paragraph from that post:

The question is this: are those who care about global warming prepared to reconsider their opposition to nuclear power in this new era? We are no longer living in the 1970s. Today, the world is more threatened even than it was during the Cold War. Only this time nuclear power – instead of being part of the problem – can be part of the solution.

Time has run out; it is time to head out for the day job, but I definitely need to learn more about Mark. One converted mind with the ability to write well can certainly help in the progress that we need to achieve.
