My senior project as an undergraduate was to compare and contrast the satirical techniques and effectiveness of Jonathan Swift and Joseph Heller. The key works that I analyzed were Swift’s “Gulliver’s Travels” (first published in 1726) and Heller’s “Catch 22” (first published in 1955). My reason for mentioning that up front was to establish the fact that satire has a long tradition and that it is one of my favorite forms of literary art with a focused message wrapped inside of entertaining writing or sketches.
